$35 Tablet Computer Made in India
Do you remember when you were a kid and went to school?
You had to get one of these nice spacious backpacks to fit in all the books that you were going to use for one day. Do you remember how exhausting it was to carry them around the whole day? If you do not just ask one of the school kids nowadays. They will tell you the same story.
While America and Europe was still wondering about long term back injuries and malposition of backbones of teenagers from these heavy school bags, India was working on the solution. The country that introduced the worlds cheapest car and therefore made mobility affordable to its masses. The country that invented one of the first cycle powered washing machines to improve the life of thousands of poor people. That country now came up with a prototype solution to one of educations biggest problems:
How to make education books accessible and easy to transport?
Providing an affordable tablet computer for school children can be the first step towards a much richer access to educational materials for people in developing countries. It can also solve the problems of the back problems of the children in the industrial nations by easing their pain. To walk around in school just with one tablet device instead of 4 or 5 heavy books plus some paper to write on, should be much more comfortable and fun. There are even more advantages, think about the opportunities for teachers. If a teacher gets sick (I have heard this might happen sometimes) she can tell her students in advance and post tasks for the class right to every students tablet. Moreover, she can provide students with up to date materials and post additional links. And I bet there are many more advantages we have not even thought of.
Now some people might argue that it is a nice gadget but what should a family in a rural area in a developing country get out of this. They do not even have electricity in their own home so how should they power their kids tablet computer?
It comes with a solar power option!
In the end there still is one question: How is India capable of offering a tablet computer at such an enormously low price? Nobody seems to know the answer yet, but let us hope that they are and will be able to improve the lives of many.
